Hitherto we have been considering certain aspects of the Christian life from the point of view of the Christian himself. We have seen that for him there is a need of, and a challenge to, these two things, repentance and consecration. And the two things, indeed, are really only two separate views of a greater whole. But just because these are matters which call for the Christian’s response in himself they are things which are speedily found to be beyond his resources and powers to accomplish. And the consideration of subjects such as repentance and consecration, if it ended there, might well leave us all in a hopeless Slough of Despond.
